California Weed Entrepreneurs Will Make $5.2B In 2018 With Almost No Banks To Put It In

California cannabis entrepreneurs will earn $5.2B in revenue in 2018 as recreational use becomes legal there. The state of California will collect about one billion dollars in accompanying marijuana taxes. These numbers, estimated by Matt Karnes, industry analyst and managing partner of New York’s GreenWave Advisors, point to the giant need for banking and financial services in the nascent legal cannabis industry.  These services however are generally not available says Karnes, and are federally illegal. Some glimmers of change though, are on the horizon. Banking is severely limited for cannabis industry businesses. As a “schedule one” substance, cannabis is categorized to be…

Cheap Weed Adds Up Fast in Paraguay’s Black Market

When the South American nation of Uruguay became the first country to officially legalize marijuana last year, headlines about $1 grams of cannabis made news around the world. As it turns out, $1 per gram is considered to be outrageous in nearby Paraguay, where weed can be had for a mere $0.06/g. You read that right. It comes down to simple economic principles like supply and demand. With a national population of just 6.7 million people, Paraguay is said to be the 2nd largest producer of marijuana in the world, behind only Mexico. Despite the abundance of the chronic cash…

For Marijuana Smokers, A Weed Manicure Is High Fashion

Behold, the weedicure. Nowadays, women who love marijuana are taking dope nails literally. They’re having real pot added to their manicures. Kat, a dancer, coined the name “weedicure” when she posted a pic of her latest nail job (pictured) and the term. Yes, that’s real weed — and some sparkle — embedded in her acrylic fingernails. After her “awesome nail lady” posted a photo of a weedicure online, Kat decided she had to have one, too. Kat rocks her pot-and-glitter “weedicure,” a term she coined. “I told her I wanted to do that, and she told me, ‘Bring your own…

How To Shop For Weed Like A True Expert

Think of Leafly as a Wine Spectator or a Goodreads. But instead of wine or books, it’s a place to gather, rate and talk about marijuana. The Leafly experience doesn’t conjure images of tie-dyed shirts and Cheech and Chong jokes. On a slick interface, with an index of over 600 cannabis strains, nearly 60,000 reviews of those strains and over 36,000 reviews of thousands of dispensaries around the world, it’s far more sophisticated. Leafly, which has been described as the “Yelp of cannabis,” represents the new mainstreaming of marijuana culture — bringing the oft-stigmatized leaf and its users into the…
