The Medical Minute: These Researchers are Developing a Weight Loss Medicine with Cannabis

Imagine a world in which cannabis is listed as one of the key ingredients of a weight loss medicine. It may sound like an amusing irony to those of us easily afflicted by the munchies, but a recent study published in the journal Endocrinology suggests this idea isn’t so far off. Apparently, a mixture of vitamin A and cannabis constituents holds promise as the next solution for obesity. “The results of our study show, for the first time, that particular compounds in cannabis and vitamin A can work together to reduce the deposit of lipids,” said researcher Dr. Yann Gilbert. “This finding opens up exciting…

New Proposal Could Make It Easier To Research Medical Benefits Of Marijuana

Marijuana supporters and opponents have teamed up on a new amendment that would create a new federal sub-category for the plant — and that could make it easier to conduct future research about marijuana’s medical efficacy. The amendment to the 21st Century Cures Act (H.R. 6) — a bill aimed at accelerating the discovery and development of new medicines  — is “designed to facilitate credible research on the medical efficacy” of marijuana, and would encourage the National Institutes of Health and the Drug Enforcement Administration to work together on marijuana research. The measure is expected to be debated in the House of Representatives…

Carly Fiorina Shortchanges Marijuana Research

In questioning the value of medicinal marijuana, Carly Fiorina said “we don’t understand how it interacts with other drugs.” In fact, there is information about marijuana’s interactions with other medications, although major clinical trials using marijuana have been limited by its legal status. Fiorina spoke with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, who asked her about the legal status of marijuana in Colorado (it also has been legalized in Washington). She said she believes in states’ rights but that legalizing marijuana is a “bad idea” (at the 30:20 mark): Fiorina, June 25: I remember when I had cancer, my doctor asked me if…

The White House Just Lifted Restrictions on Cannabis Research

A monumental announcement was just published hot off the White House press that the Obama Administration will be making a crucial reduction on restrictions that have tied the government’s hands on marijuana research policy. Up until now, all marijuana research that is not funded by the government must go through a Public Health Service review, a requirement that applies to cannabis research only; no other controlled substances listed as Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act are subject to the same process. As a result, the review process has been criticized by researchers and lawmakers alike. The Public Service Health review was established…
