The Medical Minute: These Researchers are Developing a Weight Loss Medicine with Cannabis

5

Imagine a world in which cannabis is listed as one of the key ingredients of a weight loss medicine. It may sound like an amusing irony to those of us easily afflicted by the munchies, but a recent study published in the journal Endocrinology suggests this idea isn’t so far off. Apparently, a mixture of vitamin A and cannabis constituents holds promise as the next solution for obesity. “The results of our study show, for the first time, that particular compounds in cannabis and vitamin A can work together to reduce the deposit of lipids,” said researcher Dr. Yann Gilbert. “This finding opens up exciting…

Which U.S. States Accept Out-of-State Medical Marijuana Authorizations?

5

As more and more states legalize medical marijuana, a lot of patients are starting to wonder if their authorizations are valid in any states other than where they were first issued. Fortunately, some medical marijuana-legal states do indeed accept out-of-state authorizations, and they’re listed below. The number of states is small right now, but we’ll continue to update it as more states start to allow out-of-state documentation. Why the Media Can’t Get Its Story Straight About the Amazing Medical Potential of Cannabis

1

Judging from the disparate media headlines, last week’s meta-analysis of cannabinoid research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) contained something for everyone. Here’s a sampling of the mainstream media’s seemingly schizophrenic coverage: Toledo Blade: Studies support marijuana’s role for medical needs Sun-Journal: JAMA study finds scant evidence that medical pot helps many illnesses HealthDay: Evidence supports medical pot for some conditions, not others Los Angeles Times: Most uses of medical marijuana wouldn’t pass FDA review, study finds Yahoo.com: Huge review shows what medical marijuana may (and may not) help So what was the review’s actual takeaway message in regard to the…

Congratulations to Delaware for Opening Its First Medical Marijuana Dispensary!

6

Earlier this week Massachusetts finally debuted its first medical marijuana dispensary. Not to be overshadowed by its New England neighbor to the north, Delaware went from decriminalizing cannabis last week to opening its first medical cannabis clinic today. Four years ago, the Delaware state legislature legalized the use of medical marijuana for qualified patients, and now the state finally has a medical marijuana clinic for registered medical marijuana cardholders. The First State Compassion Center is officially open for business, with patients reportedly driving in from over 60 miles away to procure products intended to help treat or manage their illnesses. With the line of patients stretching over 50 deep, perhaps…

The Actual Benefit of Medical Marijuana: What Does the Research Indicate?

4

Earlier this week the Obama administration reduced some severe restrictions on cannabis research, allowing for much more freedom to study the extent of marijuana’s medicinal benefits. This news comes at a crucial time in our country where more states are exploring the possibility of legalizing access to medical marijuana but are unsure of how much relief medicinal cannabis can bring to patients. Researchers have been trying to determine for decades which diseases, symptoms, and conditions can cannabis help alleviate, and while more studies will more definitively answer that question, past research is suggesting that medical marijuana can help with some conditions…

The Medical Minute: How Does Cannabis Impact the Progression of ALS?

6

Based on some exciting new anecdotal evidence, the use of cannabis oil to treat ALS may actually prolong the life of the patient in addition to relieving many of the disease’s devastating day-to-day symptoms. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the baseball legend, is a debilitating disorder that affects an estimated 30,000 people in the United States at any given time. You might remember ALS from that craze last summer when everyone decided to dump ice on their heads to raise awareness for the disease and to raise money for ALS research. Even Leaflyhopped on…

US House Renews Protection For Medical Marijuana Businesses In DOJ Budget

5

For the second year in a row, and with 23 more votes in support than last year, the U.S. House of Representatives has voted to protect state-legal medical marijuana businesses, caregivers, and patients from federal interference and prosecution. With 242 Members of Congress, including more than 65 Republicans, voting in support of an amendment to the Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriations bill offered by Reps. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) and Sam Farr (D-CA), the House once again forbade the use of federal funds to raid, harass, or otherwise interfere with medical cannabis patients or providers in states where medical marijuana is…

Which Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Will Be Forced To Close In Seattle?

3

The City of Seattle is planning on shutting down quite a few medical marijuana dispensaries. The plan comes after the passage of Senate Bill 5052, which makes drastic changes to the medical marijuana program in Washington. Below is a brief explanation of the plan, via an earlier article that I syndicated from The Joint Blog: Under this proposal – which is designed in response to the passage of Senate Bill 5052– the first tier would include those distributing medical cannabis to patients under 21 (which is now illegal), and those with a business license obtained after January 1st, 2013. The…
