Marijuana-Themed Float Set for Chicago Thanksgiving Parade

6

There are certain things that are part of every big-city Thanksgiving Day parade. There are usually thousands of families lining the streets to see marching marching bands, floats and oversized balloons of popular cartoon character. Leave it to Chicago to introduce a new element, one which symbolizes the pro-marijuana movement’s growing political clout and social acceptance. One of the floats in Chicago’s 81-year-old Thanksgiving Parade (sponsored by McDonald’s) will have a marijuana theme. Good Intentions, a medical marijuana dispensary, has a float, which they are calling “a garden of flowers.” It will feature a 12-foot banner proclaiming, “Growing With Illinois.”…

The Medical Minute: Does Cannabis Help or Hinder Creativity?

5

For many of us, creativity and cannabis walk hand-in-hand. A nice, uplifting sativa may be all you need to clear the mental logjam of writer’s block or to bring a fresh pair of eyes to your art. Abstractly, marijuana seems to give rise to new avenues of thought and insight, and this phenomenon has been recognized by revered, brilliant minds like that of Carl Sagan and Steve Jobs. However, a study published last month in Psychopharmacology will tell you that the creative burst you’re feeling is just an illusion. Allow us to explain. Researchers in the Netherlands administered vaporized cannabis in three different amounts…

The annual conference and lobby day, which is hosted by Americans for Safe Access (ASA), comes at a strategic time for the national debate about medical cannabis and may have a big influence on federal policy moving forward. Cannabidiol 101: A Peek Into Cannabinoid Chemistry

2

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex signaling network within the human body that uses specialized compounds known as cannabinoids to control various bodily processes by interacting with different receptors and regulatory enzymes.  Cannabidiol (CBD) is often referred to as a “phytocannabinoid.” Phytocannabinoids are plant derivatives that contain a number of diverse chemical compounds that can affect appetite, metabolism, pain sensation, inflammation, thermoregulation, vision, mood, and memory. It’s important to note that phytocannabinoids are any plant-derived product capable of either: Directly interacting with cannabinoid receptors Sharing chemical similarities with cannabinoids that allow them to interact with other components of the ECS…

How Cannabis Counteracted One of the Most Aggressive Brain Cancers

1

A promising new study coming out of St. George’s at the University of London and published in the Molecular Cancer Therapeutics scientific journals has tested the combination of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) with irradiation therapy against glioma (brain tumor) cells. The results were astonishing. When applied separately, 14mM of THC or 19mM of CBD had a 50% shrinkage rate on the cancer cells.  And when combined, it only took 7mM of a THC-CBD combo to have the same 50% reduction rate on the tumor cells. They tried different variations and concentrations, using both extracted forms of cannabis, as well…

What Does on Gram of Cannabis Look Like? A Visual Guide to Cannabis Quantities

6

Gram, eighth, ounce — what does it all mean?! We’ve all been there. Attempting to make sense of the names associated with different quantities of cannabis can be challenging. Central to the confusion is conceptualization of weights, which depend on both product size and density. If you are new to cannabis, we hope the visual guide below will provide you with a general framework to wrap your head around the common sale quantities for both flower and concentrates. Keep in mind that these depictions are approximations, given that density varies (at times drastically) between products. Now boldly step into the dispensary…

Nevada Turns in Twice the Required Signatures to Legalize Cannabis

5

Right on the heels of the victories in Alaska, Oregon, and D.C., Nevada didn’t waste any time. The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol in Nevada submitted more than twice the required signatures (offering 145,000 signatures from Clark County alone) to qualify an initiative petition for the 2016 ballot, far more than the 101,667 necessary. If all of the signatures are deemed valid, the initiative has the potential to pass as early as spring 2015, with a required two-thirds vote in both houses due to a tax component. The initiative also requires approval from Nevada’s Republican governor, Brian Sandoval, before being enacted into law. If rejected, the…
