Why are Hemp Farmers Fed Up with Federal Seed Laws?

6

Even though the cultivation of industrial hemp is now legal for research and development purposes in a number of states, farmers who are trying to revitalize the American hemp industry are facing myriad legal issues related to the acquisition of their most important resource: viable hemp seeds. These issues stem from the fact that although states may have legislation for growing industrial hemp, it is still illegal under federal law. For no reason that any sane person can comprehend, industrial hemp — with THC levels below 0.3% — is still classified as a Schedule I controlled substance. For farmers, the problems start…

If a Wildfire Spreads to a Cannabis Field, Can You Get High from It?

5

It’s been a dry summer for much of the United States, leading to an increase in wildfires that can’t easily be fought due to droughts in areas like California. But what happens when a wildfire spreads to a cannabis field? Would the ensuing blaze result in an impressive contact high for anyone in the surrounding area? Well, there was that one time an Indonesian police force burned a bonfire’s worth of illicit drugs in West Jakarta and the resulting fumes made the locals a little headachey, but did they actually get high, meaning they experienced the psychoactive effects from the activated THC? Live…

8 Ways to Counteract a Too-Intense Cannabis High

4

Any cannabis consumer can tell you that if there’s one feeling no one enjoys, it’s the moment of realization that you are too high. Maybe the edible kicked in three hours late. Perhaps you tried to impress a group of friends by breathing in a little bit too deeply. You might have just tried concentrates for the first time and were caught off-guard by their potency. Or maybe you are just a low tolerance consumer. There are a thousand ways it can happen, but once it does, the resulting experience can be uncomfortable and enough to turn off even the most seasoned cannabis lover. Fear not! Most of…

What is Hemp’s Current Status in the United States?

6

After a century of prohibition, hemp is once again taking root in American soil. With the passing of the 2014 federal farm bill (section 7606), farmers in states with industrial hemp legislation are allowed to grow and harvest hemp in conjunction with their state departments of agriculture for research through pilot programs. Kentucky, Colorado, and Vermont all planted small research crops in 2014. As these states plant for a second year, many others, including Tennessee and Oregon, have passed hemp legislation and are planting their inaugural round of hemp crops. To date, 33 states and Puerto Rico have introduced pro-hemp legislation, and 24 states…

Gavin Newsom Releases Recreational Cannabis Recommendations Report for California

3

Lieutenant Governor of California Gavin Newsom is not taking any chances — if recreational cannabis comes to California, as many advocates are hoping it will in 2016, he’s pulling out all the stops to ensure the state is poised and ready to hit the ground running. Newsom formed the Blue Ribbon Commission on Marijuana Policy, a panel of 24 advisors comprised of public health experts and policymakers, including former Senior Policy Advisor to the White House Keith Humphreys and the Executive Director of the ACLU, Abdi Soltani. The commission was formed with the goal of executing the best possible approach for…

Seattle City Council Unanimously Passes Measure to Shutdown Most Dispensaries

A proposal to shutdown over half of the medical cannabis dispensaries located in Seattle has been unanimously approved by the city’s council. The measure, which was put forth by Mayor Ed Murray, will go into effect 30 days after he signs it. Under the new law, any medical cannabis dispensary that opened after January 1st, 2013, and those who are distributing medicine to those under 21 (which was made illegal with the recent passage of Senate Bill 5052), will be forced to close their doors by July of next year, without the possibility of receiving a license to continue operating. It’s expected…

Cannabis Construction: Entrepreneurs Using Hemp for Home-Building

1

STUYVESANT, N.Y. — It started with Hurricane Katrina: the flooded houses in New Orleans festering with mold, many uninhabitable to this day. Then came the earthquake in Haiti: thousands dead, crushed by homes that should have been their sanctuaries. James Savage, then a Wall Street analyst living on Central Park West, grew disturbed about the conditions he saw on television and in the newspapers. “There has to be something better we can do than this,” he recalled thinking last week as he sat at the kitchen table inside his new home here on a cliff overlooking the Hudson River 120 miles…

Cannabis Strain Recommendations for Beginners and Low-Tolerance Consumers

3

In many instances, a bad first experience may be enough for someone to tragically banish cannabis from his or her life forever. Hemp Oil Versus CBD Oil: What’s The Difference?

Hemp_Seed_oil

By Katie Rucke  @katierucke | July 15, 2014 Confusion amongst the public on how exactly hemp oil differs from cannabidiol, or CBD, oil, has prompted the nonprofit Hemp Industries Association to issue a statement explaining the difference between the oils in order to ensure that consumers — specifically, medical marijuana patients — are not misled about the intended uses. Hemp is often mistaken for its cannabis cousin, marijuana, even though smoking an entire garbage bag of hemp would not produce an altered state of consciousness, as hemp contains low levels of THC. Confusion between hemp oil and marijuana oil has spiked recently,…
