17-year study finds legalizing cannabis lowers suicide rates

The benefits of cannabis use are many, and are as varied as the types of people who benefit from the plant. Not a week goes by anymore without at least one headline about another person, young or old, who claims that marijuana saved their life. In a groundbreaking report just published in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers from the University of Colorado, scouring state-level suicide data over a 17-year period, may have proven that legalizing marijuana may be saving more lives than we think. Looking at suicide rates from 1990-2007, the researchers focused on the 12 states that…

New Study Finds Cannabinoids May Treat Panic Disorders

A new study published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, and published online by the National Institute of Health, has found that cannbinoids may treat panic disorders. “The present study investigated the effects of systemic or intra-dorsolateral periaqueductal gray (dlPAG) administration of CB1 agonists [meant to mimic cannabinoids] on behavioural changes induced in rats by predator (a live cat) exposure, a model of panic responses”, claims the study’s abstract. After conducting the study, researchers concluded that; “These results suggest that modulation of the cannabinoid system could be a target in the treatment of panic disorders.” The study was conducted by reserachers at the Department of Pharmacology at the School…

A scientist in the United Kingdom has found that compounds derived from marijuana can kill cancerous cells found in people with leukemia, a form of cancer that is expected to cause an estimated 24,000 deaths in the United States this year. “Cannabinoids have a complex action; it hits a number of important processes that cancers need to survive,” study author Dr. Wai Liu, an oncologist at the University of London’s St. George medical school, told The Huffington Post. “For that reason, it has really good potential over other drugs that only have one function. I am impressed by its activity…

Medical marijuana dispensaries looking to open in Naperville will be allowed to do so in some retail areas and can have drive-thru windows. The Naperville City Council approved regulations for the dispensaries and cultivation centers before the drug officially becomes legal for medical purposes Jan. 1. Cities are not allowed to prohibit such facilities entirely, but they can impose more stringent zoning regulations than the state, which has rules about their proximity to homes and schools. Naperville council members agreed to limit cultivation facilities to industrial areas and require owners to go through a hearing process. Dispensing facilities will be…

New Study: Cannabis May Grow Stem Cells, Repair the Brain After Injury

A new study being published in next month’s issue of the journal Biochemical Society Transactions, and published online early by the National Institute of Health, has found that the brain’s endocannabinoid system – which is activated through cannabis use – has neuroprotective and immunomodulatory capabilities, and may lead to the growth of stem cells. “Activation of cannabinoid receptors suppresses chronic inflammatory responses through the attenuation of pro-inflammatory mediators”, states the study’s abstract. “Moreover, the endocannabinoid system directs cell fate specification of NSCs (neural stem cells) in the CNS (central nervous sytem)”. According to researchers; “Pharmacological blockade of CB1 and/or CB2…
