Can Cannabis Curb Parasites in Your Gut?

Cannabis has been used for various medical applications for thousands of years, from treating breast cancer to battling epilepsy, but there may be another health benefit of using cannabis, and you’ll probably find it especially interesting if you’ve ever had the misfortune of uttering the following words: Researchers at Washington State University have found that hunter-gatherer tribes that smoke cannabis are less likely to be infected by intestinal worms. The tribe, a pygmy group called the Aka, reside in the Congo basin and are among the world’s last groups of hunter-gatherers. Of the nearly 400 adult Aka surveyed, 70% of males and 6% of…

Texas Cannabis Legalization Bill Passes Through House Committee

Never say never, especially in Texas. We recently wrote about a proposed bill that would end cannabis prohibition in Texas by regulating marijuana “like tomatoes, jalapeños or coffee,” on the basis that “all God created is good, including marijuana.” Representative David Simpson (R-Longview) made what he’s calling the “Christian” case for legalization. Wouldn’t you know it, this bill has actually gained traction and, in a move that bowled us over (and every other cannabis advocate in Texas), the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee just voted to pass House Bill 2165 in a 5-2 majority vote. The bill would make it legal to buy and sell cannabis,…

Seattle Mayor Releases Regulations for Medical Cannabis Dispensaries

Medical cannabis dispensaries in Seattle can breathe a sigh of relief.  Mayor Ed Murray’s office released the new regulatory plans for medical dispensaries. The outline calls for similar regulations as those currently in place for recreational dispensaries, including testing standards, packaging, and advertising.  There is a new class system for cultivation gardens and dispensaries: class 1 collective gardens operate with dispensaries, and class 2 collective gardens do not and are not subjected to the more rigorous testing requirements. Class 1 gardens are required to be at least 500 feet from childcare centers, schools, parks, libraries, transit centers, and recreation centers. Class 2…

Colorado: Recreational Marijuana Outsells Medical for First Time

For the first time in Colorado’s legal marijuana market, recreational cannabis outsold medical pot in the month of July, according to numbers from the state’s Department of Revenue. In July 2014, customers purchased more than $29.7 million in recreational marijuana — up from $24.7 million in June. Medical marijuana patients spent more than $28.9 million on marijuana in July — comparable to June’s $28.6 million in sales. The numbers point toward Colorado’s medical sales potentially leveling out as recreational sales continue to rise with more and more shops open for retail sale. Paul’s Boutique: A Visual Companion

Holy Johnny Ryall! 25 years after the release of the Beastie Boys classic Paul’s Boutique, the landmark album is receiving a visual companion. The Boys delivered a soundtrack that defined a generation, with druggy anthems like “Car Thief” (I don’t buy cheeba I grow it/ Marijuana/ People always trying to get next to me/ I had a beautiful experience on Ecstasy) alongside funky tracks like “Shake Your Rump” and “Hey Ladies.” Released on July 25, 1989, the album solidified the Beastie Boys’ status as critical favorites in the hip-hop world. The film project looks like a trippy combination of music video clips,…

Rogen: “There was no Pineapple Express weed before the movie”

Which came first: “Pineapple Express” the movie or the Pineapple Express the marijuana strain? We have it on the best authority possible — aka Seth Rogen, the comedy’s star and Hollywood’s resident pothead — that the movie came before the weed. Rogen recently sat down with our friend Chris Parente, host of the “Everyday” Show (weekdays at 10 a.m. on Denver TV station Fox31), to talk about his new film “Neighbors,” which opens in theaters on May 9. Parente is a Colorado boy, and so he quizzed Rogen and his co-star Rose Byrne on all things Colorado marijuana. Seth Rogen: “I’ve never smoked weed…

The Man Who Almost Made Weed Legal in Canada is Running For Mayor of Toronto

Last week, I reported that a man named Al Gore had entered the running to become the Mayor of Toronto. Unfortunately, over the past few days it has been made clear that the Al Gore who used to ghostride the whip with Bill Clinton in the White House is not the same Al Gore who will be trying to clothesline dear ol’ Robbie Ford off of his cracked out pedestal. Inconvenient truther or not, as of today there are at least 21 people running for the mayor of Toronto and it’s only January 10th. One of those candidates is Matt…
